Understanding & Advocating for Your Rights to Rehab Services with Lewy

April 25 @ 2:00 pm - 3:30 pm EDT

Rehab therapies such as physical, occupational and speech can be beneficial in helping people with Lewy body dementia (LBD) and their care partners cope with the day-to-day challenges of living with LBD. Despite this benefit, many people in the LBDA community report being referred to therapy services by their medical doctor, and then denied access to even a therapy evaluation because they “cannot make any improvements.” Often, this is not accurate and reflects a lack of understanding among many health care providers of the vital role of rehab therapies in LBD.

Presented by Dr. Jennifer Brown, physical therapist and owner of Dynamic Home Therapy, Understanding & Advocating for Your Rights to Rehab Services with Lewy will explain how rehab services can benefit you, your rights to accessing these services, and how to locate and advocate for the best therapy.

By the completion of this presentation, you will be able to:

  1. Define the ways in which occupational therapy (OT), physical therapy (PT) and speech language pathology (SLP) services can benefit your quality of life while living with LBD.
  2. Summarize your rights to therapy services, possible care settings in which rehab services are provided across the continuum for LBD, and how to advocate for the best services for you.
  3. Identify three (3) resources to support finding an OT, PT and/or SLP in your area who understands your needs with Lewy.
  4. Develop strategies for maintaining an active lifestyle post-rehabilitation by exploring various wellness options to support your quality of life with LBD.
