Care-Resistant Behavior Internet Training for Caregiver Networks (CuRB-IT:CaN)

What is this study about?

The Care-Resistant Behavior Internet Training for Caregiver Networks (CuRB-IT:CaN) Study is testing the feasibility of delivering an existing coaching intervention called “Care-Resistant Behavior Internet Training” (CuRB-IT) to networks of unpaid family care partners who are providing care for a person living with dementia.

Care partners sometimes experience care-resistant behavior from a person living with dementia in the home. This study aims to obtain preliminary data about the composition of care partner networks in these situations; to test the feasibility of providing CuRB-IT training to care partner networks composed of unpaid family care partners; and to examine if the intervention improves care partner coping skills for care partners in the network.

What’s involved?

Participant involvement in this study spans 14 weeks, during which individuals will take part in the following steps:

  • Participants will engage in completing a questionnaire and maintaining daily diaries for seven days. All questionnaires and diaries will be conveniently completed online.
  • Participants will benefit from nine 1-hour coaching sessions delivered via Zoom over the following 12 weeks.
  • Towards the study’s end, participants will complete a concluding questionnaire and another 7 days of daily diaries.

Who can participate?

Eligible participants are two family care partners (one “primary” and one “secondary”) of people living with dementia who are experiencing care-resistant behavior with daily activities including: bathing, dressing, toileting, mouth care, eating, medications, transferring/changing positions and/or using necessary devices. The primary care partner must provide at least 20 weekly hours of unpaid care and have at least one secondary care partner willing to participate in the study. Secondary care partners may experience the same care-resistant behavior or a different one. Both care partners must also:

1) self-identify as a care partner

2) be at least 18 years old

3) provides unpaid care to a spouse/common-law, sibling, parent or grandparent (or in-law, aged 60+ years) with dementia
