The Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) Lewy Body Dementia Association Research Center of Excellence (LBDA RCOE) is located in the Movement Disorders Division and is part of the Murray Center for Research on Parkinson's & Related Disorders (MCR)
The Mission of the MCR is to support campus-wide research in Parkinson’s Disease, Lewy Body Dementia, and Related Disorders with the ultimate vision of developing novel therapies for these conditions. The MCR fulfills these roles by supporting multiple laboratories focusing on motor, cognitive, and cognitive aspects related to Lewy body disease. The MCR supports the recruitment of Parkinson’s and Lewy body dementia researchers to MUSC and provides the necessary infrastructure to facilitate the implementation of investigator-initiated clinical research. The center is located in a 4,100 sq foot facility, which houses research faculty, administration, and staff offices, as well as two exam rooms with accommodations for brain stimulation, eye tracking, investigational drug storage, and laboratory space for specimen processing. The center also oversees the Movement Disorders Clinical Trials Center and works closely with the clinicians and staff of the Movement Disorder Division of the Department of Neurology, which houses the Parkinson’s and Huntington’s Centers of Excellence and the Progressive Supranuclear Palsy Center of Care. The MCR collaborates with many other researchers and centers across campus, nationally, and worldwide, see links below.
Our staff includes seven movement disorders physicians, one sleep neurologist, two psychiatrists, two nurse practitioners, five neuropsychologists, one genetic counselor, and one nurse coordinator. In addition, we have a large team of social workers, physical/occupational therapists, and speech therapists. The approach to care focuses on the patient and their care partners.
