LBD Nose Glasses Challenge: Raising Awareness of LBD
Humor and laughter were visible throughout Victor Smigel’s life. He was a devoted family man with a charming sense of humor and would often fly out to his grandkid’s sporting events to show his support. His family recalls a time when they were visiting from out of town and Victor greeted them at the airport wearing nose glasses. “It was very funny and memorable to see,” said Olivia Derin, Victor’s granddaughter.
Even after Victor was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia (LBD), he would always find a way to laugh. LBD didn’t stop him from joking around and he continued to prank people to make them smile.
After undergoing surgery, he started to experience symptoms of sleep issues, hallucinations, and balance problems. He wasn't diagnosed with LBD until several years later because his symptoms seemed to point to something else. Eventually, his demanding symptoms would require 24-hour professional care. However, his humor remained constant during this period, and his caregivers spoke about how he would dance down the halls or "train" for his marathons when he did laps around the courtyard!
Abigail Mullens, Victor’s daughter, and his family decided to honor his memory while raising awareness of LBD through humor. The Nose Glasses Challenge does just that. You too can honor Victor’s memory, and others impacted by LBD, by participating in the LBD Nose Glasses Challenge! Grab some nose glasses of your own and take a picture, post to social media, and challenge some friends to do the same!

Volunteer Spotlight: Molly Underwood
When I found out a family member was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, I knew I wanted to help. I planned a golf tournament benefitting LBDA, because I know the money raised will help families and fund research.
Volunteering is a great way to help as many people and their families as I can. It is an incredibly rewarding experience, and it truly makes a difference in people's lives.
I encourage everyone to find their passion and give of themselves through volunteerism no matter what you volunteer for.
