Relapse Prevention Study of Pimavanserin in Dementia-related Psychosis (Harmony Study)

What is this study about?

The purpose of this study is to understand whether the drug, pimavanserin, improves symptoms of hallucinations and delusions experienced in people with dementia (including LBD), and whether the improvement can be maintained over time.

What is involved?

This study involves two parts.

  • All participants will be given pimavanserin in the first part of the study. If their hallucinations or delusions improve, participants may qualify for the second part of the study.
  • During the second part, participants will be randomly assigned to either a) continue taking pimavanserin or b) an inactive substitute (placebo). Neither the study participant nor the researcher will know who is receiving pimavanserin, which is called double-blinding. These participants will be followed to determine if a relapse in symptoms occurs over time.

Brain imaging, electrocardiograms, and blood and urine samples will be taken.

Who can participate?

An individual may be able to join the study if he/she:

  • Has been diagnosed with dementia
  • Has one of the following conditions: dementia with Lewy bodies (DLB), Parkinson’s disease dementia (PDD), Alzheimer’s disease, frontotemporal degeneration, or vascular dementia
  • Has experienced hallucinations (seeing, hearing or otherwise sensing things that aren’t there) and/or delusions (false or mistaken beliefs) for a least 2 months
  • Is between 50 and 90 years of age
  • Has a study partner who is able to attend study visits
