Standing Strong with LBDA: Stepping Forward for Those Who Can't
In tribute to her mom who was diagnosed with Lewy body dementia, and to help all LBD families, Angela Herron, LBDA’s Board President is donating $5.00 for every mile she runs during October, LBD’s Awareness Month. Her goal is to run 150 miles and raise $5,000 dollars to benefit LBDA during the month of October, and we invite you to donate per mile or any amount that you can by visiting her Firstgiving Donation Page.
Get Ready, Get Set, Go! LBD Awareness Month Gets a Running Start!
October is LBD Awareness Month! LBDA is very proud of all of our LBD Awareness Movement Participants who are donating their time and talents to create awareness of LBD during October and throughout the year. Here are just a few of the outstanding efforts around the country:
- Karen F. of Allentown, PA has 8 outreach events and media activities in October and November
- Rachael V. and Samantha L. are organizing the 1st Annual LBD Walk for Awareness in Abilene, TX on October 20
- Karen M. organized the Giddy-Up for Gary 5K in Omaha, NE on October 12
- Sue Ellen J. is doing an outreach event, delivering posters and materials to physicians and getting the word out and the PSAs to her local media in Austin, TX
Upcoming Webinar: Molecular Imaging of Lewy Body Dementia
The Society of Nuclear Medicine and Molecular Imaging are partnering with LBDA for a free LBDA webinar on October 17, 2012 from 2:00-3:00 pm. In this presentation Dr. Martijn Mueller will provide an overview of molecular imaging and the role it plays in research and in the care of patients with Lewy body dementia. Molecular imaging studies may help physicians and researchers:
- Provide an earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Lewy body dementia
- Distinguish Lewy body dementia from other neurological disorders
- Assess the integrity of brain tissue that has become abnormal with Lewy body dementia
AAN 2013 Neuro Film Festival Call For Entries
The American Brain Foundation, the foundation for the American Academy of Neurology, is now accepting video entries to its 2013 Neuro Film Festival. Now in its fourth year, the Neuro Film Festival is a contest to raise awareness about why more money is needed for research to find cures for brain diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease, stroke, autism and Parkinson’s disease. Winners could receive up to $1,000 and a trip to San Diego to see their film shown to a live audience at the Neuro Film Festival event.

New Insights into Post-Operative Cognitive Decline
Families of people with cognitive impairment or dementia often notice a ‘dropping off’ of cognitive abilities after surgery. But the cause of this change in cognition is not fully understood. New research from the University of Pennsylvania used mouse models of Alzheimer’s disease and indicates that inflammation, not anesthesia, may be the culprit.
