Post Gulf Coast
I am on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. My wife started having some signs in 2006, it was not until 2009 that an extensive work up was initiated, referrals to specialists who diagnosed her with Alzheimer's Disease but also told us that time would tell. Just recently her Internal Medicine Provider told us she suspects Lewey Body Disease due to her hallucinations, shuffling gait, and some other symptoms. We have no family in town so I am pretty much facing this by myself with our two teen age sons. My family is in Texas and Colorado, My wife's family is in Arkansas, and 70 miles away in Alabama. We attend a small church which has no organized support services that may be available in larger ones. So here I am online, emailing and calling family and facing this terrible disease which effects not only my wife, but myself as the primary caregiver and my sons. One local support group disbanded due to lack of active participation, but did tell me that there is an Alzheimer's group at the VA, I am a veteran but my wife is not. Online seems a very conveinent way to do this because I can sit at my computer and share with people going through this same problem even if they live on the other side of the country. I see a support group mainly as a place to share ideas, and to learn about resources that may be available. Resources recommended are much more helpful if they are in an area close to where you live, so hopefully if more people from south Mississippi begin to post here it would be even more beneficial and specific. Emotional support can be a benefit of a support group too because only other care givers fully appreciate the experience we are living through, even so family is still a primary source for that. Our physician can refer us to various services, and help us to figure out with our insurance provider what is and is not covered. As I did not see anyone here in Mississippi, or on the Gulf Coast or southern part of the State I thought I would make my initial posting here.
