Post Antibiotics and Quetiapine
Mum has countless UTI's one after another and is almost always on antibiotics. I have finally managed to persuade her consultant to prescribe quetiapine but our pharmacist says not to give it to her while she is on antibiotics = consultant says its ok.
Has anyone used the two together - I'm frightened i'm going to make things even worse than they are
Thanks

My husband has taken antibiotics several times while on Seroquel [quetiapine] without adverse effect. I've never heard of any issues. Maybe the problem is a specific antibiotic.

Pat's thought is a good one. There have been reports that some antibiotics, e.g. clarithromycin, can increase the steady-state concentration of quetiapine (Schultz-DuBois, Pharmacopsychiatry 2008). I'm not in my office and it's harder for me to access the med lit from home. It may also depend on the dosage of quetiapine. So the pharmacist may either know something specific from the literature or may be guessing based on mechanism of action, or may just be generally cautious.

My mother, too, has been on antibiotics while on quetiapine without ill effects, but not clarithromycin. And people on quetiapine for other reasons get treated with antibiotics, too, so there's probably pretty extensive experience.

Is your consultant a clinical pharmacologist, also sometimes called an interventionist? They are specialists in what drugs and combinations of drugs to give in different circumstances. And what antibiotic are they proposing - maybe there are safer alternatives?
Good luck!

My dad was on Seroquel and some antibiotic at the same time for many months. Sorry, don't remember which antibiotic. Hard to know if he was suffering ill effects from being on both as this was in his last year and things were going steadily downhill anyway. Lynn

Post Re: Antibiotics and Quetiapine
My Mom was recently treated with Nitrofurantone 100 mg 2x a day for 10 days for a UTI while on Seroquel, with no ill effects. We just had to make sure she took the antibiotic with food to avoid any side effects of the antibiotic, itself.

It was the UTI that threw "off" her meds. It was like something just clicked off one day and when I called the Neuro he immediately suspected a UTI. Mom had none of the UTI symptoms, so I ran to the pharmacy to get one of those home UTI test packs and ran it. Sure enough, it indicated a UTI. Called the doctor and he ordered a urinalysis and culture to determine what it was, so that he could prescribe what he thought would cure it. Within 4 days, a positive change was seen and she's now back to where she was before the UTI.
