Post Foul Smelling Urine
My mother has had foul smelling urine for about 3 weeks now, and we are not sure of the cause. I had her urine tested about 3 weeks ago, but nothing showed up. I am going to take it back in to the urologist tomorrow to be tested again. Anybody else have this problem? If an antibiotic is needed. What works well for LBD? She always seems to get worse (cognitively) on antibiotics.

When my husband's urine has as foul smell it's usually a UTI. But there are medications and foods that can also cause it. Can't help you with the antibiotics because he always improved once the UTI is resolved. They always do a culture and sensitivity test to find out what will work as most of his bacterial infections are resistant now.

The right antibiotic is the one that will kill the bug involved. (Has nothing to do with LBD.)

Have there been any diet changes (eg, adding asparagus?) or medication changes?

Does anyone notice the odor changes, some days it's "normal" and other days it's very foul & potent, and the smell seems to be airborne. Nothing has changed in liquid diet, from day to day, amounts are the same. Nothing I have found masks the smell which can at times be overpowering and impossible to avoid, does anyone know of a product that could be used (safe) to spray? Thanks in advance-

Maybe try an air spray that contains orange or lemon??

It needs to be unscented. Anything fruity mixed with the over powering ammonia is worse. It's hard to find a smell that pairs with ammonia and mask the urine smell leaving behind a clean scent. I would assume nursing homes would have some sort of system, but they havent been able to tell me anything I havent already tried.

Care facilities use products that can be sprayed on carpet, vinyl flooring, and mattresses that will cut the urine odor. I'm not sure any of that is designed to be sprayed in the air, however. (Those products can be purchased at medical supply stories or pet stores.)

One suggestion I've heard previously is to apply some Vick's Vapor Rub (or something with an odor along those lines) just below the nostrils such that you are only breathing in that odor rather than urine.

Thanks, It's just hard when you do not want to offened guest. It makes you feel as if you are a bad house keeper. We don't want to turn our friends away but the smell can be pretty bad.

We got a pretty good handle on the urine odors from my dad's apartment by: using the spray on carpeting and vinyl floors, shampooing the carpet every two weeks, washing bed linens in bleach immediately after becoming soiled, and putting soiled briefs in a plastic bag and taking the bag outside to the garbage bin immediately. We used a special cleaner for catheter bags so that they wouldn't smell so much, hanging in the shower to dry.

I guess the advantage of living in a care facility is that all the "guests" are aware of the problems and are more tolerant of smells.

Items do not have a smell unless there is an accident of course, and hygine is very well maintained showering each day and washing off again before bedtimes, surface odors are eliminated (thank goodness) it's just when using the toilet, the smell does not come from the diaper pale either. So I am just confused as to what could be done.- thanks again!

Once my husband, before Lewy dx, had urine that smelled really bad--when he would leave the bathroom the smell just lingered in the air. I insisted on taking him to the doctor for a UA and he did have a UTI. But if your mother's UA comes up negative I just don't know! Did you say she is on a liquid nutritional supplement? Does she have diabetes by any chance?

She is not diabetic. I was just mentioning that she is not dehydrated, that her liquid intake is usually the same amounts. The doctors can not really pin point the problem, and why it only happens in cycles. -Confused????

We had a similar situation but the doctor said the urine came back negative. However, the doctor prescribed Bactrim anyway and the awful smell went away!

Bactrim is a sulfa compound antibiotic often used for UTIs.
