 St. Patrick's Day
Very late in the day, but I'd like to wish everyone a happy st. Paddy's Day. It was a great day here, weather was beautiful, and the children had a great time marching in the parade.

 Re: St. Patrick's Day
Thanks, Ger. It's been quite a day here... but I still love all that it used to mean to my Irish husband, Dale. I brought out the decorations a couple of weeks ago just to cheer myself up. Visitors have enjoyed them.

 Re: St. Patrick's Day
We've decided to leave the St. Patrick's Day reminders in the house for Dale's 'party.' My girlfriends have agreed that they are so appropriate for him that we will just enlarge on the theme. It's going to be a fun 'party.' I wish you all could join us. Top of the morning to all of you!

 Re: St. Patrick's Day
Give me an update, Ger. Is the typical 'Irish Wake' still part of the Irish culture? Thanks for the blessing. I need it!
My Dale Shannon O'Carroll would have loved it!

 Re: St. Patrick's Day
Hello,
I dont have much to say here- My dad's name was Dale too Leone and was half Irish and half German. He acted more like the Irishman! He was a great fun loving guy. We didnt know much about his family.... I would love to go to Ireland and search for our roots. His last name was Carothers. Know any?

It's a familiar name, Sharon. Ger may know some there but I think the name is from Scotland.

 Re: St. Patrick's Day
Over here in Ireland now, it is not such a great send-off. The dead are mourned in a funeral home, more than at home, and it is not like the old days. People just form a queue, shake hands with the bereaved, and leave. It feels so clinical and like everyone is in a hurry to get home. The body is then taken to the church, where a few prayers are said, and the mass and burial are held the next day. Now, there are some who still do the old traditional wake at home, and it is more like the send-off party that I am sure you are planning for Dale. I remember one family in particular, sending hurleys, a pint of guinness and a sod of turf to the altar as gifts - it was beautiful.
I personally don't like the way funerals are here now, and was much more impressed with the job my cousins did with my aunts wake in New York 2 years ago. It was fantastic. It was much more like the traditional Irish wake, with everyone gathering around telling their wonderful memories of my aunt. There were videos and photos and it was so much more personal. They even had a beautiful Irish shamrock wreath, an Irish flag wreath, and would you believe, a lipton tea-bag wreath. I was hugely impressed with her wake, and the personal way in which it was done. I am sure you will do Dale proud, and if there is anything personal you would like to know, please email me and I will respond immediately. God Bless, and take care of you, Gerxxx

Sharon, I have not met anyone with that name but I must look it up. Any idea what part of Ireland?
