Post Auditory Hallucinations
Does anyone have any suggestions on dealing with auditory hallucinations. My Mom hears music, babies crying and thunderstorms. She keeps asking me to turn off the radio, which of course isn't on. I have an easier time diverting her attention away from her visual hallucinations than I do these that she is hearing.

Mary,

Can you say "Let me turn the radio off" and then go over to some device, pretending to do something?

Or can you turn on some "generational" (greatest hits from her teens and early 20s) music instead?

Or sing a song with her?

Robin

I think turning the 'radio' off is a good idea. Sometimes when my husband would see 'someone' in the corner, I would get the dog to bark and scare him away. 'Well, he's gone now!', I exclaimed. You will not disabuse them of their delusions or hallucinations by reason. Distraction never worked with my husband as he was fixated on whatever it was.

Thank-you for your suggestions. My 87 year old mother was recently diagnosed with LBD and I think I have to remember that I cannot talk her out of these auditory and visual hallucination using reason. As you know its hard.

Think of yourself as an actress in a great play about the funny reality that is your mother's!

I have to tell the people in the back seat to quit humming. It seems to work for now so I think the turning the radio off is a great idea. That worked for awhile, but then mom started noticing that the radio was not on. Sometimes you wish their memory was not quite so good in some areas!
