The way brain donation to Mayo works in Canada is the same way it works in the US: you find a pathologist (and there are many at St. Michael's) who will do the tissue removal according to a protocol, and you instruct the pathologist to ship the tissue to Mayo. Mayo will provide your family with a written report in about 8 weeks. Assuming the tissue is removed according to the protocol, the tissue is banked "forever" and used for research. There's no guarantee what research will be going on into the particular disorder your father is found to have, but there's a good shot at Mayo that it will be included in research. The cost in the US for the family to donate the brain to Mayo is about $750. I have talked with some pathologists in Canada who will do the work at no charge. If you are interested, you can email me. Or, call the pathology lab at St. Michael's and ask if this work is done and what they charge.

By the way, Mayo is the location of the PSP brain bank. (And there are PSP brains from Canada.) A major PSP genetics project is underway utilizing tissue from over 1000 people. They have discovered several new genetic associations. The results of the research have been submitted for publication.
