 Re: Let's Share Some Comfort Feeding Ideas Many medications have a liquid form, as well, which can be administered orally with a syringe instead of a spoon IF they are taking thin liquids OK. If not, then mixing it with pudding or jello might work.

I'm not a doc but I don't like the idea of holding anyone's nose/mouth closed either. Before I started crushing my husband's meds (have to do it now for swallowing reasons, but I really wish I'd have started sooner) he would also spit them back out. Sometimes I'd find them in a chair where he had held on to them long enough for me to go away then spit them out. I'd also find them shoved into the straw used in his water glass. (He did this with his tongue while pretending to drink). If you can change your prescription to non-time released you may find it easier to crush the meds. I used to dread that part of the days more than anything cuz I never knew how he would respond each time he had to take meds. Now I mix them with maple or chocolate syrup and he is happy to take them. I tried using applesauce and the bitter taste wasn't masked at all. Good luck, Sher

Re: Let's Share Some Comfort Feeding Ideas I found Frank didn't always swallow the meds, once I saw the pill had disolved on his tongue. I now give him his meds, when he sits down for breakfast and dinner, before he eats, then I'm sure they're down. When I ask if the pill went down, he may reply, I don't know, maybe or yes and it hadn't. I don't think he knows, or maybe doesn't know what I'm saying.

giving pills Dale gets his supplements in two groups. One at breakfast and the second at lunch. Swallowing isn't quite a problem at this point but he thinks it is easier if there aren't so many at one time. Some supplements are supposed to be taken 'during' meals so they do a better job of dissolving. (I'm reminded that I've seen reports of pills that have gone right through the system and appeared in the toilets of elderly people. Some claim that it is merely the pill cap that does not dissolve.)
Dale's Synthroid and Sinemet need to be given on an empty stomach so those have been given to him on waking in the morning - an hour before breakfast.

Re: Let's Share Some Comfort Feeding Ideas Thanks for the helpful suggestions. I'm going to ask the Dr. if there is a liquid form of Sinement. Wayne loves maple syrup and crushing them and putting them in syrup would make him happy. He actually did fine today with his meds. That's one thing about this disease - everyday is different....Jeanie
