The dynamic between a parent and an adult child who share a home changes their relationship to a closeness that a parent - young child relationship can't have if that child is to grow up well. It does become similar to a marriage (without that one particular aspect). My married sisters have even remarked on this. For me, the loss will be just as significant, perhaps even more so because it involves my closest companion, who just happens to be my parent.
