 Re: Hospice
Lynn, so it wasn't just his pressure ulcer that caused him pain but he had pain all over?

 Re: Hospice
This mentions 'pain with movement.' That is when Dale is in terrible pain.

 Re: Hospice
I have just informed the hospice staff that Dale is now moaning with each breath in moments when he is awake. I gave him crushed methadron 5 mg in a little applesauce and morphine .5 under his tongue - which I hope will help. Unless these reduce the pain significantly, I doubt he will get a bath this morning.
His breathing is irregular. He seems to wait several seconds (which seems like an eternity) and then take a breath. However, he is still trying to whistle... which seems totally inconguous. Someone suggested that he does it merely because it's something he can still do.

 Re: Hospice
Right now, I'm feeling like a failure. The hospice aide who came to wash Dale was here on Friday but I didn't move him over the weekend because he screamed in pain everytime I touched him. I changed his condom catheter twice a day but I didn't try to move him. Not moving him was a mistake.....
I gave him morphine just before she came this morning, and when we turned him to change him, etc....... (You probably guessed it) .... He has a pressure sore on his hip where he has been lying for over two days. Darn! The skin isn't broken ... but I feel terrible. It looks like a really bad bruise.
He is now lying on the other side and she'll be back tomorrow to help me again... so we'll be sure he is moved every day.
Did anybody say 'we're learning'? I sure am!

 Re: Hospice
I learned some other things as well.....
It's easier to use a flat diaper on someone who is in bed all the time. The aide showed me how to put it on easily... which, of course, means moving him. Since he is in great pain, trying to put underpant style diapers on him is impossible.
This afternoon, they will deliver more effective medication... which will be placed suppository style in his rectum. I'll write the details when I receive it. The nurse who came earlier repeated the advice that I should use the morphine as often as seems needed.
I just noticed that one hand is quite swollen. I suspect that has something to do with poor circulation. His blood pressure was the lowest I've ever seen for him. 78 over 70, I think she said.
Added info: I called the hospice nurse to ask what I should do and she said, "He needs to be moved every two hours." I said, "Are you going to help me do that?" She said, "No we don't do that."
I just called on a big strong neighbor.....

 Re: Hospice
And yes, Nan, THIS IS GOING TOO FAST.... my head is spinning.
My mother lasted 12 days this way - without food.... I just hope Dale does not.

 Re: Hospice
Leone, you are NOT a failure. You are doing so much, and I don't think I could do all that you have done. You are an amazing woman, and if Dale could, he would tell you he is so proud of you and grateful for all you have done for him.

 Re: Hospice
Thanks for that, Ger.... You must have read Dale's mind. The very last sentence he said to me was, "I'm proud of you." Of course, I've heard that from him many times. (I'm a musician) But this time, it meant so much to me.

 Re: Hospice
Leone, did the nurses show you how to turn Dale using a draw sheet and how to prop him on his side with pillows?

 Re: Hospice
Leone, I agree with Ger, you are hardly a failure. I have been so impressed with how well you have managed the cascade of events over the last several weeks. Things have changed mind-numbingly fast and you have just kept plugging away and doing what needs to be done. No one could have been more dedicated than you are. Kudos to you for a job very well done!

 Re: Hospice
Leone, wipe that failure thought out of your mind. We have all failed at one time or another but in the balance you are a winner as you travel with him. Go with God and He will guide you. May peace be with both of you. Dorthea

 Re: Hospice
My head is spinning. One thing and then another. The pressure sore probably would have happened anyway. Being in bed with blood pressure that low is a recipe for sores wherever there is contact. Pat yourself on the back. You are doing a wonderful job. Hugs to you, Nan
