So after a scary hospitalization, my dad finally agreed to start taking meds, including Aricept and Seroquel.

He had a bit of a problem with drooling beforehand, but now it is really a problem. He goes through multiple handkerchiefs each day because of it and wouldn't go for ice cream with us the other day because he was embarrassed.

I know this topic has been addressed before, but any thoughts on stopping this without making his mental symptoms worse? The best thing I've seen so far is to have him chew gum -- but not sure how effective that really is. Anyone tried botox? does it hurt a lot?

The only two routes that are NOT anti-cholinergic are botox and radiation. I know many who have had botox injections who report that there was no pain -- just a prick. The key risk with botox injections for drooling is that it will affect swallowing.

I don't know anything about radiation except what was posted here.

Gerry has been dealing with drooling a lot this year. You might note her posts in particular.

My husband's drooling improves with higher doses of carbidopa-levodopa [Sinemet]. As Robin pointed out, most anti-saliva drugs are anticholinergic and cause worse problems than drooling. The Aricept, like my husband's Exelon, is the opposite of anticholinergic [cholinergic], so it can cause increased drooling. Drooling is common in PD/LBD even without Aricept.

Frank had botox injections 3 times. The only difference I noticed was the drool wasn't as thick but the volume was the same. The injections were in his neck and jaw and he hates needles but never complained. The speach therapist suggested hard candy or nibbling, like cherrio's, something that would encourage him to swallow. NOTHING worked here.
Just remember, one size doesn't fit all with this disease.
