Post An interesting book about sleep disorders
I'm not sure where to post this, but sleep problems are often symptoms that cause us CGs much grief, and I decided Symptoms might be appropriate.

The book is Sleep by Carlos H. Schenck, MD. It discusses many sleep disorders, such as sleepwalking, restless leg syndrome, sleep apnea, and RBD. I like that there are many case examples of real people with these conditions. Also I like that it presents answers based on what is known and it also raises questions that are still being researched.

Here is one paragraph in the RBD chapter: "We now wonder whether the visual hallucinations present with parkinsonian disorders and dementia with Lewy bodies are actually intrusions of the dream imagery of REM sleep into wakefulness. And might sleep attacks in these disorders be REM sleep disturbances? If so, would narcolepsy treatments benefit people with parkinsonism or dementia?"

Dr. Schenk is a senior staff psychiatrist at the Minnesota Regional Sleep Disorders Center and an associate professor at the University of Minnesota Medical School. He is also a very kind man, and my husband's sleep doctor. 8)

Thanks for posting the recommendation. Is the book appropriate for laypeople or targeted to the lay audience?

Yes, the book is targeted to a lay audience, although I'm sure it would also be informative to medical professionals outside the specialty. (It is not a text book for sleep disorder specialists.)

It is a trade-size paperback.

I find this very interesting as my husband often seems as if he is asleep while he is in the middle of these daytime episodes. It mirrors what he is like in the night when you cannot wake him up and he is doing something unsafe. In the daytime if I can somehow actually get his attention, (maybe waking up) his behavior changes and he can begin to track what is going on. HMMMM?????? Nan

I wonder if this book can be found at the library, I have a cousin right now that I suspect has LBD or lets say the bigginings of it and his Dad is gone many yrs now but looking back at my own experience with my husband I suspect the father had it too, anyway the wife of this cousin has menetiuoned a few things to me and I lightly mention something is going on with him, he can get very nasty, he has started to tremor slightly, hard for him to walk but is extremely overweight and now just this past weekend she mentioned he was beating her up at night and kind of laughed it off and I tried telling her something is wrong and my real concern is next week he is having some shoulder surgery and I have gently mentioned the issues that could bring out, Plus he has known sleep apnea already and sleeps with a C-pap, I really am concerned but as some say you can take the horse to the water but you can't make him drink it !
I am going to check this book out today and see if it is available !

Irene, it is a $16 book, and I would think that most large bookstores could get it quickly if they don't have it in stock. Libraries sometimes move more slowly.

I intended to just read the RBD chapter, but I'm reading the entire book, finding it fascinating. I had to move the book out of my office, to keep from reading snippets when I am supposed to be working! 8)

I just checked Amazon.com, which has it for $7.05. They have various shipping options so you can choose a faster delivery for a cost if needed.
