 Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Thanks for all of your input and advise. I will certainly see if a spinal tap will work. She has a hard time waking up on a good day even after 14 hours sleep. She has a high tolerance for pain so we shall see how the Vicodin goes. We don't say much to her because she can't remember from to day and it'll just upset her over and over. Still, I think she senses something is up. Looking for that silver lining.

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Going today for the pre-op. I am armed with Lewy literature for the anesthesiologist, et. al. Spinal block is going to be a no-go because they will need to take a skin graft from her upper arm. Her surgeon listened to us about the problems associated with LBD, so that is reassuring.

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Skin grafts can be very painful. My father had melanoma and had skin grafts to the resection site on his back. It was the graft donor site that caused him the most discomfort after the surgery.
The problem with Lewy is that the pain is sometimes displaced or even denied but the behavior indicates discomfort. Be prepared. Praying for the best for you and your mother!

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Wish your MIL well for this upcoming surgery and that I hope everything heals well, Having had a skin grft many yrs ago the gals posted correctly it is painful and it can feel like the skin is burning too, so I guess you will have to watch for "other" signs if she can't really convey that there is pain!

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Went armed with handouts I got from the LBDA website. Of course the hospital staff had never heard of Lewy body dementia. The anesthesiologist is researching options. Contacting neurologist tomorrow. Thanks everyone!
Added: Just found out that the order is now for twilight anesthesia.

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Surgery today went very well. No problems with anesthesia. After four hours of recovery she says she has zero pain. What should I be watching for? She can't remember what was even operated on. Lewy is so wierd.

Re: Upcoming Surgical Procedure Glad the surgery went well! From what I've read on the forums about reactions to the anesthesia, you probably would have seen it by now--I think kind of a delerium with hallucinations, paranoia, hostility, etc. In other words, it might be hard to tell, with a Lewy.
