 How to gain weight
I looked all over the forum on how to gain weight. Found nothing. Any tips on types of food for mom to gain weight? I give her ice cream, juices also. One other problem is that she is a type 1 diabetic. When she came to me 7 years ago, she weighed 98 lbs. I got her up to 130 at one time, she is now 95lbs. The doctor says she needs about 1300 calories. Hard to do on a soft and liquid diet.----Jack

Some ideas come to mind but I think the best pathway is to ask her doctor for a consultation with a nutritionist. Since she has Type I DM, there are a more complex issues than can easily be addressed on the forum. God bless you for caring for your mother!

I also consulted with the nutritionist and got pretty much the same info. What I am looking for is some ideas on what others have had good luck with trying to get someone to gain weight.----Jack

Boost and other supplemental drinks come in 'high calorie' versions. But I guess you'd have to watch the carbs.

My dad has been losing weight, even though he has 1 - 2 Ensures per day in addition to his meals. A couple of his CGs have been making him grilled cheese sandwiches before he goes to bed, plus a glass of choc. milk. His rate of weight loss has decreased since they started that. They'll put whole milk in tomato soup and do other things to make his meals more high calorie. He loves cheese so they give him extra, and make him baked potatoes even when no one else is eating those things in the dining room.
He eats a ton of junk food if he can (like candy, sodas), but miraculously doesn't have diabetes. I gain weight just looking at what he eats! LOL
Hi cal milkshakes can help too.

Add things to her food, such as powdered milk or powdered protein supplements, to boost the calorie count. Can be added to anything creamy. Also, add extra mayo to appropriate foods. Also, add more protein for muscle mass (muscle weighs more). Anything can be pureed. Have been successful in weight gain by using these little tips.
